Biagio Palumbo (Coordinator, Associate Professor): graduated in Engineering with experience in the aeronautical industry, he earned a PhD in “Materials Technology and Industrial Engineering” from the University of Naples Federico II in 1995. Formerly an Assistant Professor in “Manufacturing Technology and Production Systems,” his research focuses on experimental design, statistical process monitoring and optimization, and high-frequency multi-sensor data analysis. He collaborates actively with industry leaders such as Avio Aero (a GE Aviation business), Grimaldi Group, Hitachi Rail STS, and Stellantis. Currently, he serves as President of the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics (ENBIS).

Antonio Lepore (Associate Professor): his main research interests include the industrial application of statistical techniques to the monitoring of complex measurement profiles from multisensor acquisition systems, with particular attention to renewable energy and harmful emissions.

Christian Capezza (Assistant Professor, Ricercatore a Tempo Determinato di tipo A): he works on advanced statistical methodologies for engineering applications and his research interest is on active learning, functional data analysis, generalized additive models and statistical process monitoring. In April 2020 he completed the PhD in Industrial Engineering at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Naples Federico II. During the PhD, he was visiting PhD student at the School of Mathematics of the University of Bristol and at the Department of Statistical Sciences of the University of Padova. He is a former member of the board of young SIS, the group of young statisticians of the Italian Statistical Society, for the years 2020-2021.

Emanuele Rossi (PhD student): he achieved the MSc Degree cum laude in Mechanical Engineering for Design and Production at the University of Naples Federico II in July 2021, with a thesis entitled “Application Scenarios of Principal Component Analysis in Ship Design and Manufacturing Engineering”.

Davide Forcina (PhD student): he achieved the MSc Degree cum laude in Mechanical Engineering for Design and Production at the University of Naples Federico II in June 2023, with a thesis entitled “Resistance Spot Welding Process Monitoring Through Mixture Function-on-scalar Regression Analysis”.

Alumni

Fabio Centofanti (former Assistant Professor, Ricercatore a Tempo Determinato di tipo A): currently Postdoctoral Researcher at the Statistics and Data Science Section of the Department of Mathematics at KU Leuven, Belgium. His research interests include functional data analysis and statistical process monitoring. In September 2021 he completed the PhD in Industrial Engineering at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Naples Federico II, under the supervision of Proff. Biagio Palumbo and Simone Vantini. He is a former member of the board of young SIS for the years 2022-2023.

Gianluca Sposito (former PhD student): currently employed by Hitachi Rail STS, in May 2024, he completed the PhD in Industrial Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II. In March 2020, he obtained the MSc Degree in Aerospace Engineering at the same University and then he took an online student three-month internship at ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development). His PhD research project regards the analysis of big data in engineering fields and statistical methods for process monitoring, by the integration with modern data mining and artificial intelligence algorithms.
