Biagio Palumbo (Coordinator, Full Professor): graduated in Engineering with experience in the aeronautical industry, he earned a PhD in “Materials Technology and Industrial Engineering” from the University of Naples Federico II in 1995. Formerly an Assistant Professor in “Manufacturing Technology and Production Systems,” his research focuses on experimental design, statistical process monitoring and optimization, and high-frequency multi-sensor data analysis. He collaborates actively with industry leaders such as Avio Aero (a GE Aviation business), Grimaldi Group, Hitachi Rail STS, and Stellantis. Currently, he serves as President of the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics (ENBIS).

Antonio Lepore (Associate Professor): he holds the following courses and serves as both a program committee member and quality evaluation representative of the PhD program in Industrial Engineering. His main research interests and international journal publications focus on statistical methods for analyzing and monitoring high-dimensional data, with applications to engineering and environmental sciences. He is a member of the SIS (Italian Statistical Society), INFORMS (the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences), and serves as a liaison between ENBIS (European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics) and ISBIS (International Society for Business and Industrial Statistics). He is an Associate Editor of Technometrics, the INFORMS Journal on Data Science (IJDS) and Statistical Methods & Applications (Applications).

Christian Capezza (Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, Ricercatore a Tempo Determinato di tipo B): his research focuses on statistical methods for engineering applications, with particular interest in functional data analysis, statistical process monitoring, generalized additive models, and active learning. He obtained his PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Naples Federico II. He has held visiting positions at Georgia Tech, the University of Bristol, and the University of Padova. He is a former board member of Young SIS, the group of young statisticians of the Italian Statistical Society, and currently serves as Communication Officer of ENBIS, the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics.

Davide Forcina (PhD student): his research focuses on developing advanced statistical methodologies for engineering applications, with interests in active learning, online learning, statistical process monitoring, and functional data analysis. He is currently a PhD student in Industrial Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II. In June 2023, he earned his MSc Degree cum laude in Mechanical Engineering for Design and Production from the same university, with a thesis titled “Functional Mixture Regression Control Chart for Resistance Spot Welding Profiles.” As part of his research, he was a visiting PhD student at the Department of Statistical Sciences of the University of Padua.

Alumni

Emanuele Rossi (former PhD student, until February 2026): he completed his PhD in Industrial Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II in February 2026. His research, titled “Statistical Methods for Sustainable Mobility”, focused on monitoring high-speed train batteries and was carried out as part of a Ministry of University and Research initiative under Decree No. 352/2022. During his PhD, he collaborated with Hitachi Rail STS in Napoli and spent six months at Perpetuum ONBOARD Hitachi Rail working on vibration analysis. He earned his MSc cum laude in Mechanical Engineering in 2021 with a thesis titled “Application Scenarios of Principal Component Analysis in Ship Design and Manufacturing Engineering” and is a member of ENBIS.

Fabio Centofanti (former Assistant Professor, Ricercatore a Tempo Determinato di tipo A, until December 2024): he is currently Postdoctoral Researcher at the Statistics and Data Science Section of the Department of Mathematics at KU Leuven, Belgium. His research interests include robust statistics, functional data analysis, and statistical process monitoring. In September 2021 he completed the PhD in Industrial Engineering at the same department, under the supervision of Proff. Biagio Palumbo and Simone Vantini (Politecnico di Milano). He is a former member of the board of young SIS for the years 2022-2023.

Gianluca Sposito (former PhD student, until May 2024): in May 2024, he completed the PhD in Industrial Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II. He is currently employed by Hitachi Rail STS. In March 2020, he obtained the MSc Degree in Aerospace Engineering at the same University and then he took an online student three-month internship at ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development). His PhD research project regards the analysis of big data in engineering fields and statistical methods for process monitoring, by the integration with modern data mining and artificial intelligence algorithms.
